How to Use the NOPLEdogs Training Harness

The success of this training method relies on your patience and consistency with a positive, reward-based approach.

Throughout the following instructions keep positive reinforcement with treats and saying the phrase 'NOPLE' when your dog pulls.

Before You Begin

  • Create a positive association: Allow your dog to sniff the harness and reward them with treats. Let them wear it for short, supervised periods inside to get them used to the feel.
  • Check the fit: Ensure the harness is correctly fitted to avoid rubbing or discomfort. You should be able to slide two fingers between the straps and your dog's body. The front clip should sit centred on your dog's breastbone.
  • Gather high-value treats: Keep a supply of highly motivating treats ready to reward your dog for walking nicely.
  • Prepare the environment: Start your trial in a quiet, distraction-free area, like your garden. Avoid busy streets or places with lots of other dogs until your dog understands the process.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Attach the dog lead. Clip the lead to the D rings, located on the dog's back.
  2. Start walking. Use a verbal cue like "let's go" and begin walking. Hold the lead with both hands for better control.
  3. Reward a loose lead. Praise and reward your dog with a treat whenever the lead is loose and they are walking calmly by your side. For the initial stages, give a treat every few steps.
  4. Stop when they pull and their head goes down and say NOPLE. The instant you feel the lead start to tighten, stop walking completely and stand still. This teaches your dog that pulling does not get them what they want and their head will be pulled downwards.
  5. Wait for the lead to slacken. Be patient and wait for the dog to turn their attention back to you or for the lead to become loose. Avoid yanking or pulling on the lead.
  6. Redirect and reward. The moment the lead is loose again, reward the dog and continue walking. You can also turn and walk in the opposite direction. This will cause your dog to turn and follow you, breaking their momentum.
  7. Gradually increase difficulty. Once your dog is consistently walking nicely in a quiet area, you can slowly introduce more distractions. Start from a distance and move closer as they remain calm.
  8. Keep sessions short. To prevent your dog from becoming frustrated, keep initial training sessions brief, around 5 to 10 minutes. Always try to end the trial on a positive note.

Troubleshooting and Extra Tips

  • Consistency is key: Everyone who walks the dog must use the same technique. If pulling sometimes gets them what they want, the training will not be effective.
  • Stay calm: If your dog gets overexcited and pulls and their head goes down, say NOPLE and just stop and wait for them to calm down. Getting frustrated will not help.
  • Don't rely on the harness alone: A NOPLEdog harness is a training aid, not an instant fix. The most important components for success are proper use, consistency, and positive reinforcement.

Depending on the type of dog and its characteristics, we believe this training harness truly stops dogs from pulling on walks.
